Call for joint efforts for awareness on Fire Prevention

KARACHI: The 2nd Fire & Safety Convention and 1st Fire Safety Awards ceremony 2011 was held at a local hotel on Tuesday jointly organized by Fire Protection Association of Pakistan (FPAP) and National Forum for Environment & Health (NFEH).

Adviser to Prime Minister for Textile Industry Mirza Ikhtiar Baig was the chief guest at inaugural session. Speaking on the occasion, he said fire and safety is an important issue deeply associated with textile industry. He astonished that industrialists spend million of rupees for excellent structure and machinery but do nothing for their safety and protection which ultimately cause colossal loss when fire engulfs in any industry.

He said seminar on this topic would help to pursue industrialists to adopt fire safety system for the sake of their business and employees lives and vowed to organize such seminars for industrialists. He said the installation of hydrant system for fire protection could be very useful, citing his own example, Baig said he was given discount on premium by an insurance company on installing hydrant system in his industry. “We must educate our industrialists about hydrants”, he added.

The advisor said mostly industries obtained fake certificates of fire safety clearance, and questioned, whom are they trying to deceit by putting their business on stake. President FPAP Farhat Hussain said the country has great potential in growth of fire and safety. He stressed the need to raise awareness about this crucial topic of fire and safety in the country. He said industries should adopt the fire and safety measures in priory to save the precious lives and property.

He also laid emphasis on installation of complete chain of fire extinguishers as if any measure is lacked it could lead to big destroy. In addition, the people must be given training of these equipments as unless nobody is unaware how to operate the technology, it is useless. Naeem Qureshi President NFEH said the subject of fire and safety is pertained to everyone but it is unfortunate that it was overlooked at vast scale. He said fire also disrupt environment and poses health risks.

Deputy Technical Manager Beaurovertas Sameer Ahmed, Manager Fire Protection KESC Khalid Nadeem, MD Haseen Habib, Fawad Ateeq Bari, Engro Power Gen Shahid Nadeem, General Manager Adamjee Insurance Engr. Mansoor Ali Khan, Director Envirograf Muhammad Imran, CFO International Power Adil Mastikhan, and Habib Bank Ltd Col Retd Ali Kausar Zaidi delivered their presentations on fire and safety.

The use of modern technology as fire extinguisher was also highlighted and documentaries were played to adopt fire and safety measures. Later, the awards were bestowed to 16 companies which equipped with the latest technology of fire fighting. Vice Chairman Hilal-e-Ahmer Pakistan, Chairman Hilton Pharma Sardar Muhammad Yasin Malik distributed awards to these companies. An expo of latest equipment and technology of fire fighting also organised on the occasion to give awareness amongst all the stakeholders.
