Experts Urge Joint Efforts to Conserve Environment

KARACHI: Speakers at a program has called for making joint efforts to protect environment and said that every citizen should play an important role in this regard. They expressed these views at the second tree plantation & awareness program organized by Green Club of National Forum for Environment & Health in collaboration of I own Karachi, City District Government Karachi at the Maritime Museum.

The chief guest Bashir A Syed, a renowned scientist & researcher of alternate energy from USA was of the opinion that solar energy will help play an important role in protecting the environment. He said that in Pakistan , environment is becoming more and more polluted and there is a dire need to plant more trees and plants to control pollution. He urged NGOs, media and citizens to pay their strong role for evironment conservation.

President NFEH Naeem Qureshi said it is the responsibility of each and every citizen to join hands to save the environment. It is our basic need to keep our homes and neighborhood clean. He said that recycling should be the priority for saving the environment.Tooba Zareef, Project Director of I Own Karachi was of the opinion that the world is changing and we are suffering from earthquakes, cyclones and tsunamis. According to her, in Karachi 10,000 tons of garbage is being generated daily.

She said if we all dispose of our garbage in the mud after two weeks it will become mud and can be used as a good fertilizer. She said that awareness and civic sense must be created among the citizens. While addressing the children she said that they are the ray of hope for us and that they will come forward to save and protect our environment.

Commander Tariq Muneeb, director Pakistan Maritime Museum said Karachi is a mega city and it is different from the rest of the country due to its sea. According to him, 30 years ago our sea was blue in color but now our sea is getting grey and something should be done to protect our sea. Our sea is very rich and it is a high time that we come forward and protect it. He assured NFEH of his support and hoped that the youth of the county come forward and protect the sea.

Khalid Shah, chairman of the Private Schools Association said children are the future of Pakistan and they should work hard to protect the environment. He also said that the children should concentrate more on their studies.While talking about the text books, he said that the books should be made according to the latest research and topics related to the protection of environment should also be included. He assured NFEH for strong support of the Association to promote green club concept for environmental awareness & education in future.

S.M Yahaya director environment protection agency said EPA has managed various campaigns for industry & people but it is duty of all citizens, including industrialists, municipal organizations, builders & transporters to follow rules & standards for betterment of society. Shahid Masroor, Ali Raza and Anwar Aziz also spoke on the occasion. Later, children belonging to different schools performed songs, speeches and participated in the tree plantation. At the end of the ceremony, certificates were presented to the participating children.
